Turkey Day/Hanal Pixan Great Fun! Wave Goodbye to Marisa :(

SONY DSC

We ate like kings and queens! Turkey, potatoes, vegetables, sweets and pie (both the dessert and pizza variety) We had the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new friends. It was a lovely get together. Next on the agenda is Christmas. Start thinking about what you would like to bring for the white elephant gift exchange!

As I have said in the past, and as most teachers can relate, it often becomes difficult to say goodbye when a student moves out or up from your class. This happens to me every year because I am always blessed with such amazing students.

Today, Marisa Kantun finished the last class of her first year. Marisa has been such a dedicated and amazing student, with a smile and positive attitude, always. She will be missed every Saturday. I always ask my students to write a bit about their first year experiences in the TT program. This is what Marisa had to say:

Teacher Training program has been an unforgettable experience for me. Thank for the opportunity given to me at the beginning try to improve in the English language, to understand and be better. The school has been very entertaining, interesting and above all motivating to continue learning. I could relate to the contents (topics) with which I work now, because I am a primary teacher. I learned a lot during my lessons: Micro, Mid-terms and all those experiences as well as academic, also have shared good times and friends at social events. We shared the Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, among others. This program has changed my life and I am very happy to have completed it and to have learned so many enriching strategies that will help me become a better teacher. But this would have not been possible without my excellent teacher Deb Redmond, Who was a wonderful human being and has taught us a quality education. It certainly has been one of the best experiences in my life.

Another Successful Bowling Adventure!

As you can see, bowling was great fun once again! Alex Acosta was our Kingpin bowler this year! And I still am a master nacho eater! We had so many birthdays to celebrate! There were more birthday babies than not there. It was about the only time we could get away with singing “Happy Birthday to me…”

On Tuesday, October 13th, at 6pm, we will be celebrating our Thanksgiving/Hanal Pixan/Halloween/Dia de los Muertos mash-up party. The first years and I will be celebrating that night at CIS Poniente. Even though it is during class-time, the door is open to any TT alumni and their family. It will be a pot-luck. I will be bringing the Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing and pumpkin cheesecake. Gita has volunteered mashed taters; Dani is bringing tamales. If Antonio wants to bring his wife’s Most Incredible Pib (wink wink nod nod) that would be heavenly!

If you want to join in the feast just message me on facebook and let me know with a note on what you think you may bring and how many will be attending.

Also, please remember the food donation box set up in the lobby of CIS Poniente for our Holiday food drive. Any can food or dry food product would help. If you have any children’s games or clothes we will take those as well. Let’s do what we can to make some families’ Holidays brighter. If you attend or are close to CIS Centro, you can also drop items there and I will arrange to have them picked up.

Summer Approaches…

end-of-school-year My mother once told me that the older I got, the faster time would fly. Truer words have never been spoken! Getting to know all my wonderful students is a double-edged sword. I become so attached to you all and then, like a mother experiencing empty nest syndrome, I watch you all fly away. Graduation is fast approaching for my second year students and internships loom in the wings for my first year students. Although it saddens me not to see you all every week, I do take comfort in knowing, once again, we are sending more competent, warm, compassionate and passionate teachers out into the world! My heart over-flows with pride and love for you all! One hope is that I will see many of you, alumni, second year, first year and any friends you know who may want to practice their English at “Coffee and Conversation” nights. This year they will be held at Gloria Jean’s on Garcia Lavin (Calle 32). Starting July 5th, every Monday at 8:00 p.m., we will have  fun and informal coffee meetings. You can keep me updated on your adventures  :) GJCOF As in the past, I have asked some of the first year students to write a bit about their experiences in the program:

Jorge Luis Perez Cruz: IMG_9054 Hi everyone, I have to say that this course is very attractive because the classroom environment is enjoyable, and I´ve learned a lot of useful information. During the course I´ve made such nice friends, the teacher is very supportive. I think my first year at the CIS program was very pleasant. I had fun during my classes and that´s why I learned more easily, my classmates were very friendly, I think that this experience is going to be sufficient enough in order to become a teacher.

Regina Abril Mendez: 1 In the TT program, I’ve learned not only the methodology and theory of how to be an English teacher, but also I have gained experience in front of real classes which has helped to have more confidence, as well as to improve my responsibility and writing, speaking and listening skills in the English language. My first year in the TT program brings me good memories and has already opened more doors for me in my academic and work life.

Gabi Novelo Cardenas: IMG_9883 When I started the TT program I didn’t expect it to be a place in which I would not only learn a lot, but also where I would be able to open up and meet people with the same interests as me. I am happy because I am gradually becoming less shy and I enjoy doing lessons and see my students enjoy them too. It’s been an amazing experience so far!

Antonio Santa Cruz Polanco: IMG_8637 It was great. It was an excellent way to remember my English basics and it allowed me to connect with great teaching strategies, helping me develop more than a few teaching abilities. I highly recommend it.

Enrique Gomez Godoy: IMG_8708 My experiences during this past year studying the teacher training course was amazing. I learned new vocabulary and also I learned how to speak and work in front of a lot of students. We had several activities and movie days! The teacher and the students are great! I was able to work with them perfectly

Fabiola Mezquita:

IMG_8707

My experiences in the TT program have been amazing, I have learned a lot in different aspects such as ways to adjust our teaching methods to specific needs, how to help improve the learners’ understanding or to make it easier for them. Apart from the teacher perspective, I’ve learnt to feel comfortable in front of a crowd and it has improved my own confidence towards the matter, it has also helped me improve my own skills and I’ve met really nice people in the process. I think this course is something that people should definitely try even if teaching isn’t their main goal, because it will end up being one at the end of it when you realize how much fun you can have and how much you can help others learn.

This First Year of teacher training has been such a good experience. To study one of the things that I really have passion for, made me feel excited and I learned more about education. I met great people there and made very good friends. I’ve learned that all of us have a part of creativity that we didn’t know we have it, a subject can be taught in a million ways. All teachers make an important role in student’s lives, that’s my main reason to choose teaching for my career. A perfect example is the person who always supports us and made classes in such a fun way, Deb has changed the way I used to think how a class should be. I’m very happy to have finished my first year Of Teacher Training everything has been perfect, I would study it again if I could.
